Does Amazon require license/ID/passport for sellers now?
I made an Amazon sellers account that I never really used years back (maybe 2014ish?). I was having success elsewhere and no orders from Amazon and just stopped updating listings. Somewhere in 2019, I decided to work on updating Amazon listings. I had noticed a few things sold between the years, but after a week were refunded and that was that. It didn’t seem to effect my account (which was a relief, as it’s nice to know I could take a break when I wanted and not have to worry about the account or the buyer getting refunded or removing all listings or whatever). Again, nothing was selling, but I was just working on getting the inventory listed. Then Covid hit and I sort of just stopped everything entirely. Once again, I decided to give Amazon yet another shot a few weeks ago.
When I signed in, my account looked active. But eventually said to reactivate, which I did. After that, when I clicked the link to any of my actual listings, mine are not there, despite appearing as ‘active’ on my account. When I tried to reactivate one of the few items that was not listed as active, it said I needed to update my credit card before doing such for my account to be ‘active’. The card they had was expired, so I did that, waited the 48 hours they claim it may take before reactivating, but it still asked for this. I forget how, but I finally arrived at a different alert that requested I ‘finish setting up my account’. Not sure what that even means as it didn’t specify. Then I noticed an email that said to upload some forms of identification (ID, license, passport), but nothing on my account that requests this.
I tried to make a new account to check if that was required now and it appears on there as well. The option goes away before you select your country, but after I selected US, it popped back up. It says it’s to conform to recent EU standards and applies to those in most EU countries, but I am not in any of those countries, nor is my address or phone number. The last time I was updating, I was commuting to Canada regularly and likely was working on this while I was there as well. The Amazon.ca marketplace pops up on that account, so I presumed as much, at least. But that doesn’t explain why I’d have to submit more info for EU accounts (or why it still popped up for a totally new account, for that matter).
So, is an ID, license, passport, etc. type of personal documentation requested from everyone now? If you had an older account, were you required to submit a form of identification whenever this went active to continue selling? I haven’t seen anything anywhere specifying all US users have this requested, and those that did appeared to just get caught in a loop of not having their documents accepted or a bunch of other headaches. I wasn’t sure if I was getting that because the accounts now looked suspect, whether that’s due to periods of inactivity or being in different locations or whatever else. While I’d rather not have personal info floating around in too many places, I’d feel a lot better about it if I knew why they were asking, since it just seems like they’re asking for more info without ‘reactivating’ the account.
