product idea validation

i have a product idea. there is not much direct competition but there is a strong established brand that is selling well with solid stars. the thing is their product is aesthetically very bland. i think i can offer the same product in a fun and decorative way and create market for myself. if i can get 10-20% of the big brands share that would be enough for me. how can i validate if this is a good idea? should i create a pick fu survey and post competition and my product photos and ask which one they would buy ?
