Variation listing keyword targeting

Hi all! I have a question about variation listing. I created one for the first time, and the child listings differ in terms of colors. Do you guys have any insights on whether it is more effective to target the same keywords or different keywords in description, backend? I wonder how the keyword ranking works for variation listing. If child listings target at different keywords, would that boost the overall pool of keywords for the entire listing?
